Life and death at one point is wondered about by all human beings. Everyone knows it is inevitable, however we still struggle with ourselves thinking about it because on one hand we want to live and on the other hand we know that life has an ending. Chris knew that going into the wild was what he wanted and there was nothing that would stop him. He was a noble person in his quest to survive, never lucky. Over time passed he seemed to have a better understanding life.
Chris McCandless left his family without a trace only to find out that living was something he had to do for himself to set himself free from his parent’s lies and his marriage. He left to find himself and to search for something he did not have. Unfortunately, the poisonous plants led to his death. He also realized after slowly starving to death that happiness was not real unless shared and that running away from his family would not change him. For this reason, in his last note to Alexander Supertramp, he wrote he shouldn’t change himself but be who he was, Christopher McCandless.

Surviving horrible events isn’t considered luck if you fought to stay alive. That will power to survive gives one that extra strength to accomplish the impossible. In this case, it was his positive attitude that kept him alive. There wasn’t such a thing as cheating death. It was no luck. His will power to continue living kept made him survive the horrible events. Living is to not be afraid of things. Life is accepting the good and the bad that comes with it. Wanting to live is the desire to continue the struggle to fight off all that is bad and accept and not to take for granted all that is good.

While living in the woods contemplating everything about life and thinking about the wonders of the world, others were enjoying life and taking for granted everything they had. His solitude made him a better man by realizing what he is really made of. It also gave him an understanding of the meaning of living and why we exist in this world. His choice of life style was a personal decision; the events that occurred were far from lucky. He was a very courageous and humble person.

A man who thinks he was lucky after going through with the events Chris faced is foolish. One has the power to change things if his desire to survive is in him. If you think you’re lucky for things that happen to you then you are not grateful for the things around you. You won’t find a deeper meaning of life if you don’t know how to appreciate it like he did. Talking about life and death and luck can cause many conflicts. Learning the meaning of life is one’s own perception, but being grateful for life was Chris’s.

Going into the wild was noble, through struggles and adventures to find a deeper meaning of everything. The values of life, risk people take every day, going to work, all this needs to be done. Entering the wild with no experience or equipment shows the determination and value of his surroundings. To have survived a near death experience makes him appreciate more the value of life. A man who just gets lucky will go on living, but it no sign of the will to live. Chris was a man who lived life for the values of it and to the fullest, nothing less.

Into the Wild

1. Read the italicized passage on page 168 that McCandless wrote and the italicized passage he highlighted from Tolstoy on page 169. Based on these writings and events in this chapter, what convinced McCandless that it was time to return to civilization? What did he learn from his time “in the wild”?

-Being reborn to him was realizing the truth to what life means. living has no circumstances. Appreciating the things in life, and what he once took for granted, until now. Truth and honesty, reality, being independent and able to survive is when he knew it was time to go back. It is how someone relates to a situation that has true value. He realized its time to return to civilization, he is ready.

3. Do you feel, as one letter writer did, that there is “nothing positive at all about Chris McCandless’ lifestyle or wilderness doctrine …surviving a near death experience does not make you a better human it makes you damn lucky” (116); or do you see something admirable or noble in his struggles and adventures? Was he justified in the pain he brought to family and friends in choosing his own solitary course in life?

-Going into the wild was noble, through struggles and adventures to find a deeper meaning of everything. The values of life, circumstances people take every day, jobs and tasks needed to be done. Entering the wild with no experience or equipment, shows the determination and value of his surroundings. To have survive a near death experience makes him appreciate the things in life, a man who justs gets lucky will go on life just stubborn minded of past events in life or future. The last sentence in The Great Gatsby seems to be the thought of Gatsby’s life style. He was a man of the future and past, believing that you will be stronger, but still trapped in the past his mind was, of the thought of daisy who he loved. The last sentence signifies his thoughts his life style, Gatsby is a man of role playing confused of who he was. To stretch our arms out farther could have meant trying harder, thinking to believe to not let anything pass you by. To run faster may also have meant to not slow down and just look ahead. Gatsby was a man of self confusion and sympathy, but a man believed the green light was the future, something to look forward to and wait for, to wait for the future and rekindle the past. Contrasting motifs are everywhere; Gatsby idea of making daisy happy contradicts his own happiness. He chooses to fulfill her every need yet to feel fully happy, days go by as Gatsby is just a servant to her every need. He wishes to see a future with her and be with her but her decisions of not getting a divorce seems to get in the way of if it is really love for Gatsby or for his money, making Gatsby seem more obsessed then in love with her. He feels fulfilled with her happiness but empty inside to know or think of tom with her. Daisy is confused on what she really wants, her love for money or her love for Gatsby or Tom. The idea of having all three fulfills her wants but also confuses her emotions more , does she really love tom or Gatsby, making it seem as if she is empty inside and doesn’t know what she wants anymore or what she can have. The Great Gatsby is a book of many complications in life and a glimpse of the past. Nick tells the story like a dull man, but in a curious way. He hasn’t really experienced a lot of things, he tells the story from firsthand experience. He doesn’t really teach us personally about anything, but the situations that he is put into with daisy, Gatsby and tom. Their love situation and the views on their life styles may give us away of new perspective of how times could have been or how people seem to be. Nick does explain one lesson though, the last sentence in the book says, “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that the year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter – to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther… and one fine morning – so we beat on, boats against the current, Bourne back ceaselessly into the past.” that our future is up to us, but our past will always be with us. The Great Gatsby is seems like anyone could have gotten rich if they wanted to. The idea of bootlegging seemed so easy all you had to do was meet the right people. It was like the American dream because the dream consists of making money and making yourself worth something. Does the American dream mean though it has to be a legal job of getting your money or does it just consist of just making it in America. It has both sides to it, making it economically but what if you get caught. To me if he made the American dream he made a name out of himself, he made money out of it all, and always got what he wanted, but without daisy with him was he truly happy, contradicting the idea of the American dream. I guess the decision is up to however you think.

Over the past years the Mexican sewage has crossed over into the San Diego area,
causing problems for San Diego and it has been getting worse. in 1993 it caused an
annual loss of 100 million dollars. the two country's came to an agreement and
built a 200 million dollar border facility to handle sewage. you can get more
information on this link

A sewage spill causes OB to close, this is useful to my project because i am taking my photos at OB to see what it looks like down there and how polluted the water looks there.

San Diego after it rains and how bad it is? It talks about Pacific Beach and how you can get sick from the water, this relates to my project because the trash in the water pollutes the water, and my question is can we stop polluting the beach or will it continue?

In Dani's article she found protections on birds so i got curious and now wondering is the beach water effecting the animals as well?

Nick and Gatsby have some similarities. they are always with many people and seem to know all the right people. there both at parties and are uncomfortable there. they both also think alot to always seem to be in the loop like they want to know or curious to find out something.but on the other hand they do do diffrent things and seem to react to things diffrently, gatsby is more suave and nick is confused and doesnt know what to do sometimes.

I think that the author chose to from a first person perspective because it shows from a view of someone if you were there making it possible to image the time and style of the time and how things look and were.

EXAMPLE--The trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange just after the crash of 1929. On Black Tuesday, October twenty-ninth, the market collapsed. In a single day, sixteen million shares were traded--a record--and thirty billion dollars vanished into thin air. Westinghouse lost two thirds of its September value. DuPont dropped seventy points. The "Era of Get Rich Quick" was over. Jack Dempsey, America's first millionaire athlete, lost $3 million. a QUESTION FOR THE PUBLIC

Is there anything we can can do to save the ocean water ffrom the polution or will it just continue and can we just slow down the process?

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

"Media Saves the Beach"

Is there anything we can really do about the pacific gyre, or just try to reduce the amount of trash?
- is this really a big issue or just something that will continue.
Do people know the issue at hand about the water? Or do they have no clue?
- many people want to help the ocean but how are they advertising it to notify people
Can we still make a difference after reducing the pollution in the ocean or will it always be a ongoing issue?
is this a now problem or a forever ongoing situation

"ESSAY"

The war is still going on because of the confederate flag. To some people it represents the pride of the southerners to others it represents the slave states. For white southerners people find it as to be there flag but to the black southerners it is something that is felt like a hate sign. In dying for Dixie when questions were being asked about the flag, the lawyer had said the flag is a racist flag. For many being in an area where hated or mistreated by other was hard for blacks. In horwitz journal he arrives in the town entering a bar with racist comments and saying on the wall, rude people getting in his face jumping to conclusions. As he is in the bar a man approaches him wanting to start a fight, showing how ignorant the people in the bar were, giving an understanding why possibly the war was still going on. While he runs out the bar for his life he walks to the city not to far away across the state line to check into a motel. During all this we read that people have been talking about the murder of Michael Westerman and how some see him as an icon a hero for to die for the confederate flag over 130 years.

As the days goes on he goes about to finding the man who shot Michael. He talks to the man, telling him who he is. He was a boy from outside the town who was sent out to make a better life for him. He was viewed as a trouble maker a fighter, but he wasn’t. He was tired of how he was viewed and just ended up falling back into his old ways. The war isn’t a war, more of an eye brow raiser for outsider of still conflict over this situation, which come to say that not as changed from the south, they still haven’t recovered from the past and learns to let it go, as the former leader. For years there has been conflict between blacks and whites. Like the southerners have never let it go. Maybe past generations passed down stories from the past and brain washed there kids, and then there kids brainwashed there kids.

" Whats The Deal With Reconstruction "

What's the deal with Reconstruction?
The deal with reconstruction was for the south to get better and rise from the fall of the war.
What is/was Reconstruction? What went well? What went poorly?
The reconstruction was an idea for the south to get better and back on there feet and for it to be a equal area. what went well was the idea of putting enforcement to help the blacks. what went poorly was just assigning governors, instead of putting governors who wanted the same things as the north.
Why is it relevant today?
it is relevant today because even now their are still cases similar to the ones happening now.

John F. Kennedy a visionary, “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what can you do for your country” bringing everyone together as one, impacting people to have a better understanding of their country. If America’s history has shown us anything it is that our future is a reflection of our past leaders.

It has been about 13 years since I started getting into my countries history. The 8th grade is when I got into my history class we had to write a report of Americas hard times and visionaries. Sitting at my computer wondering what I could write about, one person came to mind, “John F. Kennedy”.

I started to wonder in what ways he changed things, searching for research and articles about him, inspiring many powerful people such as Martin Luther king Jr. which caused many civil right movements. Although we were taught about MLK and JFK it never really dawned on me until now how much of an impact they each had. Time went backwards as if memories of all the movements and segregation people went through drinking from different water fountains, going to different schools. Seeing how people tried to break there spirits and hopes, but even then people stood up and fought for what they believed in, all because of John F. Kennedy who wanted civil rights, an icon for all Americans past, present and future.

An admirable man when he was growing in the ladder of politics he didn’t forget the American people, achieving dreams and hopes, one day I hope to grow the ladder of success and be and inspiration for further generations. Kennedy has inspired me to continue my goals in life an that I could help change someone else’s life while following mine.

I would agree with all the things President Kennedy did, I would have done the same thing as anyone else would if they felt strongly about this situation. John F. Kennedy was a man of success and a man of the people. He has inspired me to see my life in a new way and try to show many people in the future the importance of civil rights. John f, Kennedy opened new doors for me and others, though a horrible tragedy happened, which made people realize that they will be able to overcome this and go on what John F. Kennedy wanted.

“Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”

"Icon Reflection"

1. What did you discover about your writing during this project?

I discovered that i need to learn how to cut back on the ings in my paragraphs and to have strong sentences that catch the readers attention then instead of starting of with a boring fact.

2. Identify and describe (at least) one specific writing technique that you used. How did you use it? What effect did it have on your writing?

In my final draft a technique that i use is the less on the ings and more words that are actions to make the essay more exiting. the effect that it has on my paper is that it makes it more powerful and exciting instead of dull and boring.

3. If you had time for one more draft, what would you do?

If i had time for one more draft i would revise everything to add more of the writing tools in my essay to make it more polished. another thing i would do is to try to write more in my essay so it doesn't seem like its so short.

4. Copy one sentence that you believe is well-written and/or important to your overall piece. What makes it stand out to you?

"If Americas history has shown us anything it is that our future is a reflection of our past leaders."
- to me this piece stands out because it is captivating and makes you wonder if it is true

"American Icons"

John F. Kennedy was one of America's greatest presidents he took action on more equal rights, new legislation's. He had a vision to make America a better place for all.He wanted America to continue old ways of the nation that was more dedicated to human rights. he brought aid to developing nations.

John f. Kennedy to me was an inspiring man who showed people that all should be equal. he did many things he could to help the nation and succeeded, but he was assassinated shortly before his thousand days in office.

to many people JFK was an outstanding president but was also thought to be some what of a communist. though his thoughts and actions were questioned, he still was one of the most successful president to have a very powerful impact in many peoples lives.

" Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country"

The Beatles a new kind of music. more then just music an inspiration for many Americans. John, Paul, George and Ringo were just normal working men that inspired the nation and the world. They made people see the political views of what was going on in our nation.

The beatles were more then just a band they were a symbol of peace, love and human rights, they wanted a united world.

"A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality"

Theodore Roosevelt was Americas 26th President. He had a powerful view on getting what the people wanted unless it went against the constitution. Roosevelt was one of Americas heroes, the leader of the rough riders during the Spanish- American war.

He ensured the panama canal and did also many other great things like the Monroe Doctrine. He set many goals and completed them he was a man of the people a man of his word.

To me he is one of americas greatest presidents of all time. He wanted to make people happy and for america to be a better place and a safer place.
